Ed Hugus

b Pittsburgh (United States), June 30, 1923 – d Pebble Beach (United States), June 29, 2006

One of Carel's first sportscar team mates, Hugus entered and co-drove the 550 Spyder chassis 0123 to a 1500cc class win and 8th overall in the 1957 Le Mans 24 Hrs. Their hugely successful run meant Carel's international breakthrough and caused him being drafted into Porsche's works line-up for 1958.

Hugus caused controversy by his role in the 1965 Le Mans 24 hours, most of it centered around the question of whether he drove the winning Ferrari with Rindt and Gregory. Hugus himself contended he drove the car in a two-hour stint during the night, but the truth may never be known.

Hugus was a Ferrari, Porsche and Shelby Cobra racer for most of his career and lived in Pebble Beach, California, until he died there in 2006.
