Ecurie Maarsbergen

A small office, a shed and a trailer – that was all that Ecurie Maarsbergen amounted to. It was Carel’s very own racing outfit.

Maarsbergen was the center of Carel’s universe. The Maarsbergen estate, Motel Maarsbergen – it was only fitting that his very own racing stable would be named after his town of birth. The motel’s head office served as the Ecurie’s head office too, and a shed behind the motel was used to store the racing cars between races.

For many years the team itself consisted of no-one else but Carel, sister Cornelie and Arie Anssems. Later on, some apprentice mechanics would follow them around Europe.

The ever-resourceful Beaufort managed to secure sponsorship during 1963, and subsequently renamed the team Ecurie Pan American. Along with the British Racing Partnership, which was known as the Yeoman Credit Racing Team in 1960 and the UDT-Laystall Racing Team in 1961-’62, Carel was among the first in Europe to enter into such a commercial relationship. The Pan-Am deal allowed him to have his Porsche flown to overseas events free-of-charge, the Dutchman cleverly using Schiphol’s airfreight terminal as the backdrop for several photo opportunities depicting him as the suave international gentleman racer...
