Carel had bought a 904 and his objective was to start at Le Mans together with Gerhard Mitter and Guy Ligier under the Racing Team Holland banner. Guy Ligier drove the car during the test weekend of April 19th at La Sarthe and was timed 17th. However during tests at Zandvoort Gerard van Lennep crashed the 904 and it was a write-off.
When Gerard called Carel to give him the bad news Carel laughed it off and said that it was kind of funny that he never bothered to insure the Porsche. He thought he could save money that way.
