The Roman Grand Prix was a non-championship event that was run over two heats of 40 laps around the Vallelunga circuit, which meant two races of approximately an hour. There were 19 entrants and all of them were privateers. During practice Carel set a personal record by claiming pole position – the first and only time he would hold one in his Formula 1 career. He was over a second faster than Bob Anderson in a private Lola and the internationally unknown Italian Bernabei in a De Tomaso with Ford power. Alas Carel was never really a contender for victory.

The race saw a battle between the De Tomaso and the Lola and when Bernabei retired on lap 27, Anderson took victory in the first heat with a 20-second advantage on De Beaufort. In the second heat Anderson led from start to finish although the gap between him and Carel’s Porsche was only eleven seconds at the finish. On aggregate Anderson won ahead of Carel in second and Raby in third, over a minute and a half down.
