The event which evidently marked Carel's motorsport debut at the age of 18 was a regional rallye from Eindhoven to Bayeux and back. It was organised by the small Automobiel Sport Club 'De Kempenrijders' to commemorate the liberation of Eindhoven by allied forces in the second world war. Due to lack of interest the event didn't survive the end of the fifties.
Joke Maasland used the Cotura RS her father bought a year earlier and Carel was her driver during this event. The ex-Hugenholtz Cotura RS was built by Coos van der Tuyn. Based on the wonderful BMW 328 he created a lightweight car with a Frazer-Nash Le Mans like bodywork and an upgraded engine with go-faster goodies from Bristol, included the better carburators.
